Causes of Knee Pain

There are many chronic conditions that can cause knee pain, but one of the most common conditions is osteoarthritis.  With this condition, the hyaluronic acid in the knee becomes diluted.  Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the knee.  When HA becomes diluted in the knee, increased inflammation can start to break down cartilage.  Limited cartilage increases the pain people experience.  If people are regularly in pain from knee movements, they tend to reduce their activity level all together, adding to further knee degeneration.  The lack of HA creates a vicious cycle in the knee joint that can be difficult to stop.

Non-Surgical Knee Treatment

Recently, the FDA has approved a new, non-surgical knee procedure that can help break this cycle of recurring and damaging knee pain.  A synthetic version of HA, derived from rooster collagen, can safely be used in human knees.  To start the process, a patient must visit with medical doctors to determine if he or she is a candidate for HA replacement treatment.  To do this, doctors will perform a full evaluation including X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs.  If the patient is determined to be a good fit, the process can begin.  Using an ultrasound to guide an injection needle, HA is slowly injected into the knee joint.  The injected HA acts as a synthetic cushioning component to help alleviate pain when walking and moving.  To complete the knee procedure, five separate injections are administered over a five-week period.
