Headaches & Migraines

Headaches and migraine pain can be debilitating, putting people out of work, school, and social activities for hours and even days. Most medical practitioners prescribe medications and recommend stress relief techniques for patients. However, treatment rarely goes past this, leaving people in pain and out of action. Our Goodyear chiropractor at the Estrella Pkwy Medical Center can offer treatment and relief through our pain clinic without using medications with long lists of side effects.

Understanding Headache Pain

Headaches are a frequent occurrence; with the World Health Organization estimating nearly half of all adults around the world will experience this pain every year. The most common types are tension ones, which can feel like their head is in a vice, and often is the result of stress. Cluster ones last up to three hours, occur only on one side, and feels like a burning pain.

How are Migraines Different from Other Headaches?

Migraines are more intense and last longer than the common ones such as tension and cluster headaches. The pain starts on one side of the head and gets worse. It's described as a throbbing or pulsing pain that can continue for several hours to as long as three days. It has other symptoms such as light and smells sensitivity, nausea, and vomiting. Additionally, some patients experience,

  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tender scalp

These symptoms may start a few hours to a day or two before the migraine's pain as a forewarning to patients.

How Can Chiropractic Care Treat Headaches and Migraines?

Our Goodyear chiropractor treats headache and migraine pain with the MiRx Protocol, a treatment program that uses a simple nasal spray and an applicator, which effectively reaches the Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG). These are a group of nerve cells that connect to the trigeminal nerve and are the root of most headaches and migraines. The spray is a local anesthetic that can block or partially block the SPG to reduce pain. MiRx Protocol is safe, effective, and doesn't involve any needles.

Another technique for tension headaches is a trigger point injection at the area where the pain is to block the pain receptors. These are a local anesthetic that may contain a corticosteroid. If a steroid is used with the numbing agent, it can reduce the inflammation of the tissue surrounding the nerve to relieve pain.

In addition, chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy can provide relief for cluster, tension, and migraine headaches.
